Ohio: A Maturing 2023 Market
Ohio launched online sports betting on January 1, 2023 — one of the most high-profile state launches because Ohio combines a population of ~12 million with two NFL teams (Browns, Bengals), one of the most-bet college football programs in the country (Ohio State Buckeyes), and an NBA franchise with a national fan base (Cavaliers).
The state initially set a 10% tax on online sportsbook gross gaming revenue but doubled it to 20% in July 2023, only seven months in. Even at 20%, Ohio remains more promo-friendly than New York (51%) or Pennsylvania (36%), and operators continue to compete aggressively for market share.
Ohio is unusual in that it allows betting on in-state college teams — including the Ohio State Buckeyes — though college player prop bets were restricted starting in 2024. OddsLab automatically applies these rules so you only see legal markets.
