Closing Line Value (CLV)

Definition

Closing Line Value measures the difference between the odds at which you placed a bet and the final odds when the market closes. Consistently beating the closing line is widely regarded as the single best predictor of long-term profitability because closing odds reflect the most efficient market price after all information has been incorporated.

Formula

CLV = (Your Odds - Closing Odds) / Closing Odds x 100%

Example

You back Team A at 2.10. By kick-off the line has moved to 1.95. Your CLV is (2.10 - 1.95) / 1.95 = +7.7%. Over thousands of bets, a positive average CLV strongly correlates with profit.
