Risk of Ruin

Definition

Risk of ruin is the probability that a bettor will lose their entire bankroll. It depends on edge, variance, and bet sizing. Aggressive staking (high % of bankroll per bet) dramatically increases risk of ruin even with a positive edge. Proper bankroll management keeps risk of ruin acceptably low.

Example

With a 3% edge, 1.90 average odds, and 2% stake per bet, your risk of ruin is approximately 0.5%. Increase to 10% stakes per bet and risk of ruin jumps to over 20%, even with the same edge.
